Samsung experimenting with edge-to-edge display for Galaxy B phone

According to a Korean newspaper exclusive, Samsung is preparing to launch an edge-to-edge smartphone in the late second or early third quarter of this year. The source is short on details — and heavily butchered by Google Translate — saying little more than a Samsung official said that the razor-thin bezel on this device was “difficult to implement.” Right now, it’s being referred to as the Samsung Galaxy B.



One possible (if not likely) target for such a design would be the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S3. An slideshow image of the S3 leaked last October, and its display certainly appeared to have almost no visible side borders. The top and bottom aren’t bezel-free, nor would you really expect them to be. The gentle curve would allow the S3 to glide in and out of pockets easily (as most phones aim to do) and top edge also needs some room to incorporate the phone’s speaker and front-facing camera.

Details on the Galaxy S3 remain sketchy, but most insiders are guessing that it will feature one of Samsung’s latest Exynos processors. That early slide mentioned a dual-core 1.8GHz chip, but more recent rumblings are leaning towards the quad-core Exynos 4412. Beyond that, a high-res 4.6-inch SuperAMOLED Plus display, 2GB of RAM, and a 12 megapixel rear camera have also been mentioned. With several other quad-core phones due to hit the floor at MWC 2012 in a few days, it’s also been tipped that Samsung might be bringing the Galaxy S3 to the show.

Samsung, for its part, has said that won’t be happening, but they are going to be showing off the Exynos 4412 — so you’ll at least get to see what might be the phone’s powerplant.
