Siri is unquestionably a beta feature. The assistant offers some handy functionality, like sending messages, checking the weather, and setting reminders — all while using casual language. But Siri’s full powers won’t be unleashed until it gets third-party app support.
Though it may be another year or two until Apple adds Siri third-party app support, the jailbreak community — as it often is — is a step ahead. A new Cydia app, called AssistantLove, integrates Siri with several popular GPS and music streaming apps.
Spotify subscribers can use AssistantLove to play tracks using their voices. Though Siri already does this with your music library (including iTunes Match), Spotify integration means that the service’s more than 15 million songs are at your beck and call, and you literally only have to say the word to call them up. This is obviously a great feature for those who jam out to Spotify while driving.
Speaking of driving, an even better feature of AssistantLove is GPS integration. When you ask Siri for directions, “she” typically brings up the stock Maps app — which only gives you a list of directions, not navigation. With AssistantLove, though, you can pick from several of the most popular GPS apps to provide navigation. So you can simply say “navigate to Clark and Division,” and Siri will open Waze, TomTom, Navigon, or MotionX-GPS with the directions ready to go.
This is huge. Android has integrated voice control with Google Navigation for ages, but iOS has been without. This tweak fills what some considered to be a gaping hole in iOS. The Spotify integration, meanwhile, offers a step forward which is hopefully a preview of what’s to come (Grooveshark and Rdio support later, perhaps?).
AssistantLove costs $2 in Cydia, but Spotify subscribers and those who use navigation apps will find it to be priceless. Though this is just the initial version, AssistantLove is highly recommended, and will soon be added to our list of best Cydia apps.
