Angry Birds Space coming on March 22

Well, what do you know, Rovio is pushing out another Angry Birds game! Surprised? Didn’t think so. Though details are scarce, a couple of brief teasers have told us that there is a new game called Angry Birds Space that will be flung into app stores next month.
It will be the fourth full game for the franchise, after Angry Birds, Angry Birds Seasons, and the movie tie-in Angry Birds: Rio.

The teaser trailer (below) and an even less-informative website are all we have to go on at this point. A bird that is either robotic or wearing a spacesuit is used in the promo, as well as the phrase “one small fling for a bird, one quantum leap for bird kind.”

Considering the franchise’s formula and the subject material, we can probably expect long distance shots at space structures. It could be similar to the low-gravity levels that were introduced in last summer’s Angry Birds Seasons: Summer Pignics update (pictured, right). Who will be the enemies this time around? Pigs? Aliens? Your guess is as good as ours.

One of the few details that is revealed is that game’s release date. Angry Birds Space will arrive on March 22 (just in time to enjoy on your iPad 3′s retina display). No platform details were released, but we would expect to see this on both iOS and Android at launch.

Angry Birds has established itself as the king of casual gaming, but we could see smartphones and tablets begin to transition into more serious gaming platforms. Now that the devices are picking up quad-core chips and more powerful GPUs, 2012 could be the year that the line between mobile devices and dedicated consoles blur.

With that said, Angry Birds — and Rovio’s mega-empire of merchandise — isn’t going away anytime soon.
You can see the latest installment’s trailer below; just don’t expect much juicy info:
