Max Payne coming to iOS and Android in the next couple of months

Rockstar Games is an iconic company. There are few video game publishers who can capture gamers’ imaginations in quite the same way. So when Rockstar speaks, we listen. Today, Rockstar spoke about the mobile version of the original Max Payne. Though the company had already announced in 2011 that the classic title would be coming to mobile, it appears that the release date is rapidly approaching.



The news came in the form of a Q&A session on Rockstar’s website. A reader asked if there is any news on Max Payne for iOS, and Rockstar said that yes, it’s on its way. An official announcement will be coming soon, but the game should hit sometime in the next couple of months.

Though the question only specifically referenced iOS, we’d be shocked if there weren’t an Android version as well. Rockstar will likely be approaching this in much the same way that it approached the mobile release of Grand Theft Auto III late last year. It, of course, is available for both iOS and Android (at least on select Android devices).

This is great news for mobile gamers. Casual games from Chillingo and Popcap are fine and dandy, but you know you’re a serious gaming platform when Rockstar comes to the party. In addition to the GTA III port, the company has released GTA: Chinatown Wars for iOS, as well as a simple music-making game (based on a collaboration with Timbaland) called Beaterator.

The Max Payne release is obviously a way to drum up interest for the upcoming console release of Max Payne 3. As the franchise doesn’t have the brand recognition of GTA, the mobile release is an opportunity for Rockstar to remind gamers how much they loved the original, and introduce younger generations to the pleasures of Bullet Time.
