It took a scant few hours for the new Angry Birds Space from Rovio Mobile to dominate app charts all over the world. This shouldn’t come as any great surprise; Angry Birds and the follow up Angry Birds Seasons were smash hits on each platform they reached. This time Rovio launched en masse and gave users multiple ways to enjoy the game, which can actually be a little confusing.
Angry Birds Space has hit the number 1 slot on the Apple App Store in almost every country stats are tracked. It’s also doing staggeringly well on Amazon and in the Google Play Store for Android apps. Users of iOS can get the game for iPhone for $0.99, and for the iPad priced at $2.99. There’s no free trial or ad-supported app, sadly.
On the Android side, Angry Birds Space can be played for free on any Android device through the Play Store. The free version is ad-supported, and there is no paid version for phones. Anyone with an Android tablet (they do exist) can get the HD version without ads for $2.99 from Google. Android users also have the option of getting the game from Amazon’s Appstore in both free and paid versions for phones or the Kindle Fire.
This title is a radical departure for Rovio after relying on the tried and true physics gameplay from the original Angry Birds for two years. Angry Birds Space has the player making use of gravity and momentum to push the vile pigs out of orbit, or crush them beneath mounds of space rubble. Thus far, users seem happy with this change in the franchise.
Rovio has already seen in excess of 700 million downloads of Angry Birds games so far, and that 1 billion download threshold seems like a lock now.
